Naturopathy Treatment

Naturopathy Treatment by Nicole Constant, N.D.

TREATMENT APPROACHES and HEALTH ASSESSMENT

The Naturopathic Practitioner in Ontario is trained and licensed to work with you in several modalities of therapy and health assessment.  With experience, we develop a special interest in one or more.  At present, I am especially interested in clinical nutrition, including detox procedures and in therapeutic lifestyle counselling.  However, my experience also shows me that all of the modalities listed below are very valuable.

Clinical Nutrition

No area is so important, so individual, or still so neglected. Nutritional therapy can be as simple as one supplement or, in extreme cases, nearly a full-time job.  It is wonderful to see how a person's taste for food changes in a healthful direction when you give it the right start.  Choosing the right foods can improve your body, your mind and your emotions.  You can increase your ability to handle stress, maintain a trim body, and strengthen your immune system with a meal plan that is right for you.  (Perhaps you know what you should do but something is holding you back?--that's a problem we can work on.)

Therapeutic Lifestyle Counselling

Physical, emotional, nutritional and environmental factors effect health. It has been scientifically demonstrated that racism, bullying and economic stress all result in health loss.  In order for you to tackle those issues, you need your full strength and for that, you may need to know first how to disconnect them from impacting your health.  Possibly, you may think you already know more than you want to what's good and what's bad for you to eat or drink or smoke, because the newspapers and the TV are happy to scold us.  But when it comes to connecting your individual needs to your individual goals, then the details we look at can help to put your own motivations in the driver's seat.  Another special challenge we see from time to time is the child who, for medical reasons, needs to follow a different diet from their peers.  We want them to understand the choices in a way that gets them on side.

Herbal Medicine

Herbs are next-of-kin to modern medicine and must be used with care.  The advantage of herbs is that they provide a complete complex of factors rather than one purified agent.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy developed in Europe in the 19th century.  Using the principle  "like cures like," minute amounts of natural substances are administered in very tiny doses to stimulate the bodies healing capacities.  From a theoretical viewpoint, we don't know why they work.  But they do work, both for people and animals.

Hydrotherapy

This consists of various techniques, primarily alternating hot and cold applications.  The most direct effect is on skin and muscle tissue, but by stimulating other mobile tissues, hydrotherapy can assist organs and circulation.  The overall result is to mobilize fluid circulation in the body, basic for de-tox.  For many patients, it is a powerful stress reliever.

Bio-Impedance Analysis for body composition

A quick, computerized test that shows the ratios of particular body tissues.

Hair Mineral Analysis

Hair cells carry traces of all the minerals in the body, both those that are essential nutrients and those that can be toxic.  Hair samples are analyzed in the laboratory by spectrography.  Because hair cells grow slowly, the results reflect a three-to-six month average of your chemical state.

Electro-Dermal Assessment of allergic sensitivities, nutritional needs and functional stress via computer, is a helpful compliment to established diagnostic methods.  It is related to the ancient oriental practice of acupuncture and must still be considered experimental.  We have worked with this promising method for several years.  At present, we are not doing so but may recommend testing by other clinicians.

Standard blood tests are also very valuable.  (Note that you should keep copies of all test results, as you have a right to do.  This avoids unnecessary duplicate testing.)

The most important tool for health assessment is what you tell me about your (or your child's) health history and experience
